Hughes Principal Lucille Howard accepts a check from HOK

Global design firm HOK held an Open House to showcase their new offices on March 26. As part of that event, they held a silent auction to benefit Charles Hughes Elementary, raising over $4,500 for the school’s programs.

HOK employees became familiar with the school during a community service project they performed earlier in the year in West Lawndale.

U.S. Cellular Gives $250K to IL Teachers

U.S. Cellular funded over 450 classroom projects nationwide as part of its 2009 Calling All Teachers campaign. The company worked with DonorsChoose.org around Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8 to donate $1.1 million to meet classroom needs.

Over $250,000 of the funds went to teachers in Illinois, many of whom hosted U.S. Cellular employee visitors in their classrooms.

“Chicago Public Schools appreciates the support U.S. Cellular has provided to our schools and teachers through the DonorsChoose.org partnership,” said Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins, Chief Education Officer of the Chicago Public Schools. “The recognition and reward offered to these extraordinary teachers further supports their daily efforts to bring added resources to their classroom learning environments.”

U.S. Cellular also made a recent donation of 10,000 vouchers for free tickets to April or May White Sox games. The vouchers were disctributed for use by CPS students.

Mindovo Donates Computers to Fenger

Technology company Mindovo arranged the donation of two truckloads of computers to Fenger High School, located at 11220 South Wallace Street.

Carrie Healy, a Family Tree member, organized the drive for the school, which was named for her great-grandfather Dr. Christian Fenger. Dr. Fenger was a Danish surgeon who moved to Chicago in 1877 and made many discoveries about the nature of infectious disease and antiseptic surgery.

Crane HS Alumni Fund Scholarships

Crane HS Class of 1969 EventAs part of their 40th reunion activities, the Crane HS Class of ’69 and the Ebert Foundation donated $50,000 in scholarships to the Crane Class of 2009.

Crane Alumna Chaz Ebert said, “We want these students to remember that it’s important to know where you came from and that they stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. We’re doing everything we can to give them a helping hand because they represent our future,”

The group challenged other CPS alumni to get involved at their own schools citywide. Alumni of Crane and any other Chicago Public School can reconnect with their schools and each other at CPSalumni.org.

PepsiCo Rewards Student Ingenuity

In celebration of Black History Month, on Feb. 26th and 27th PepsiCo Chicago awarded the winners of two contests for CPS students: one inviting them to write an essay advising President Obama on education, the environment or the economy, and another challenging them to develop and present a new product or marketing tool.

For the Ninth Annual Black History Month Essay Contest, PepsiCo Chicago awarded three first-place prizes, one in each grade from 6th through 8th, and three second-place prizes, also selected by grade. The winning students came from Jenner Elementary, Libby Elementary and Pershing West Middle School. Students read their essays at an awards ceremony held Feb. 26 at PepsiCo Chicago, 555 West Monroe St.

PepsiCo Chicago also invited several teams of 2-4 CPS high school students to submit proposals for a new product and/or marketing concept in the area of Foods, Beverages or Snacks. The first and second place teams came from Brooks College Prep HS and the third and fourth place teams came from Whitney Young Magnet HS. On Feb. 27, the teams of students presented their proposals to PepsiCo Chicago senior leadership and members of the African-American Network.

PepsiCo Chicago has ongoing partnerships with Jenner Elementary and Libby Elementary and supports projects at other schools throughout the school year.

Tickets to Disney on Ice for CPS Students

In January, Feld Entertainment donated 1,000 complimentary passes to Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy, which played during January and February at the Allstate Arena and the United Center.
