Principal for a Day

Principal for a Day

The Annual Principal for a Day (PFAD) event historically hosted by CPS in late October will not take place in 2011.

We plan to revisit this program for next year and create a new experience for the participants and schools that will go beyond the program’s current structure. When information is available, we will let you know.

We thank you for your participation in the program and encourage you to continue supporting your selected school(s) throughout the school year and beyond.

The Office of External Affairs and Partnerships is available to assist with identifying schools to partner with, provide support and facilitation, and offer a full range of partnering options.  Please visit the PFAD website for information at www.chicagopfad.org or reach us by telephone at 773-553-4020.

Thank you again for your participation and continued support of CPS and its students.

Principal for a Day (PFAD) is a program designed to bring business and civic leaders into the Chicago Public Schools to serve as principal for one day each fall and begin an ongoing partnership with their school.

Mayor Daley brought PFAD to Chicago in 1998, and since then thousands of business and civic leaders have broadened their understanding of the accomplishments and challenges of the students, teachers and principals and launched or renewed their commitment to CPS by providing volunteers as well as materials and financial resources to support the schools.

PFAD Overview:

PFAD 2010 was held on Thursday, October 21, 2010.  The day provided an opportunity for leaders of Chicago’s business and civic communities to learn about the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and interact with students, teachers and principals in an actual learning environment.  This year, participants were able to spend the entire day at their assigned schools.  Participants and school leaders were invited to join Mayor Richard M. Daley, Chicago Board of Education President Mary Richardson-Lowry, and CEO Ron Huberman for an early evening reception at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.

Commitment Pledge of Support:

The External Affairs and Partnerships department will take this opportunity to launch the “Say Yes to CPS!” campaign.  We will ask participants to make a Commitment Pledge of Support to their assigned school.  The Commitment Pledge of Support is an agreement between the participant and their assigned school to provide a minimum level of support and resources for the 2010-2011 school year.  Commitments can be made in cash or in-kind resources at the following levels:

$10,000 +

$5,000 – $9,999

$2,500 – $4,999

$1,000 – $2,499

CPS Principals will be armed with a menu of options to discuss with PFADs during lunch.  This is the built-in opportunity for PFADs and school leadership to develop a preliminary partnership plan and for PFADs to make a commitment pledge to the school.  PFADs will make their checks payable to: Board of Education, City of Chicago.  Principals will deposit checks directly into the school’s internal accounts. Any donation to CPS is tax deductible.

PFAD School Assignments:

Leaders are recruited to participate throughout the year by CPS leadership, CPS Department of External Affairs and Partnerships staff, and school principals.  We are strategically targeting various business and civic leaders and matching them with schools aligned with their industry for increased mutual benefits.  Packets with school assignments and other resources to assist in making the day successful will be provided to both CPS principals and assigned PFADs.  We are encouraging participants to register online at www.chicagoPFAD.org starting Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Post PFAD:

The Department of External Affairs and Partnerships will conduct a post event survey with CPS principals and PFADs in an effort to improve the quality of the initiative.  We will also communicate with CAOs, Principals, and PFADs throughout the year to remind them of their commitment and provide updates and suggestions on how to accomplish their goals.  In addition to the PFAD follow up, we will communicate with CAOs and principals throughout the year to offer support and provide general updates.
